What is U=U?

U=U is an international campaign to raise awareness about the benefits of ARVs. It is an abbreviation for “Undetectable = Untransmittable.”

This means that an HIV positive person on ARVs who has an undetectable HIV viral load cannot transmit HIV, even without using condoms.

A person living with HIV is considered to have an ‘undetectable’ viral load when antiretroviral (ARV) treatment has brought the level of virus in their body to such low levels that blood tests cannot detect it.

Scientists have proven that someone who is HIV positive whose viral load is ‘undetectable’ because of treatment cannot transmit the virus during sex to their partners.

It’s important to remember that an HIV positive person can only become undetectable if they use ARVs consistently and have their viral load checked and confirmed regularly by a health care provider, such as Engage Men’s Health.

Engage Men’s Health offers free and confidential sexual health services to gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) in the Johannesburg, Nelson Mandela Bay and Buffalo City metros – with no judgment. Services include free HIV and other STI testing, free ARV treatment and free PrEP (which prevents HIV).
