Engage Men’s Health provides free and confidential health services to men who have sex with Men (MSM) in Johannesburg, Nelson Mandela Bay and Buffalo City Metros. Engage Men’s Health wishes to appoint a suitably qualified individual to serve as the Professional Nurse.

Key job purpose

The Nurse will be responsible for the implementation and provision of health services for MSM at the Melville Drop in Centre and with mobile units and to provide biomedical services such as HCT, ART initiation, PrEP, screening of STIs and TB

Key duties and responsibilities:

  1. HIV Prevention, Risk segmentation, HIV treatment, Care Support and Retention in care
  • Provision of behaviour change information on issues related to HIV, TB, STI, PrEP PEP, ART, and other related information for high-risk MSM within the mapped sites within COJ
  • Ensure that all relevant medical supplies required for outreach services are available, and kept safe at all times.
  • Ensure that you are updated with DOH policies and guidelines, and keep updated on any new developments
  • Timeously keep record of all medication and commodities that are required to provide PHC services for MSM, are ordered from the DOH
  • Monitor and keep record of stock in and stock-out of ARVs, PrEP and other PHC drugs used between the DIC and outreach, and ensure that you complete the daily stock register to monitor stock control between the DIC and outreach teams
  • Conduct the following screening services for HIV, TB, STI, Syphilis, HPV, Hepatis B and other minor alignments
  • Accurate completion of clinical files with all relevant clinical notes for all clients seen using the defined tools e.g.  PrEP register, HTS register, ART clinical file, and daily client register for the DIC and outreach teams.
  • Conduct Phlebotomy duties and interpretation of all clients results
  • Documentation of all relevant patient results within the clinical charts and discuss results with clients
  • Conduct assessment and physical assessments of all client and record findings within the clinical notes
  • Counselling and support for high-risk clients for PrEP and PEP
  • Counselling of clients for ART initiations, and retention in care
  • Provision of STI syndromic management of clients with STIs
  • Stock management and control, including infection control, waste management and ordering of commodities on a month/quarterly basis, (keep management informed of any stock-out)
  • Provide support to the team leaders to ensure that teams achieve the overall targets
  • Monitor PrEP/ART/HTS/STI targets on a daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly basis
  • Keep record of all client that require follow-up on a monthly basis, and ensure that clients adhere to their follow-up appointments and treatment
  1. Team coordination and Quality Assurance
  • Mentor, monitor and support the teams to ensure that they understand the daily targets of the project
  • Ensure that teams follow the outreach plan, and are able to do risk assessment of clients before they are linked for services
  • Provide mentorship and support to team to focus on achieving their daily allocated targets, with focus on reaching HIV positive individuals, and linking high-risk MSM for PrEP
  • Support the team to build relationships with tavern owners, and the MSM community, so that the team can work within the required space to provide HIV services
  • Work closely with the peer manager to ensure that teams have the required items required to conduct outreach,( e.g. Gazebo’s, commodities, and other supplies)
  • Conduct quality IQC checks for test kits and ensure that counsellors are following the standard guideline for HTS(use of timers, follow correct algorithm, etc).
  • Perform regular quality control to ensure testing supplies are in place at all times
  • Monitor stock for the DIC and Outreach and ensure that all required stock is available to provide appropriate HIV prevention services within the community
  • Provide excellent client service and build good relationships with clients with follow up on case finding.
  • Mentor, monitor and support the teams to ensure that they understand the daily targets of the project
  • Ensure that teams follow the outreach plan, and are able to do risk assessment of clients before they are linked for services
  • Provide mentorship and support to team to focus on achieving their daily allocated targets, with focus on reaching HIV positive individuals, and linking high-risk MSM for PrEP
  • Support the team to build relationships with tavern owners, and the MSM community, so that the team can work within the required space to provide HIV services
  1. Documentation and Reporting
  • Monitor dates of follow-up appointments to ensure continuity of care
  • Weekly meeting of all nurses for both DIC and Outreach to discuss operational issues
  • Ensure that all clients clinical notes has all relevant bar-codes have been completed correctly with follow-up date appointments and all other relevant information has been captured and scanned to Careworks on a daily basis
  • Produce weekly feedback reports at the QI meetings on relevant statistics, challenges and outcomes

Qualifications, experience and requirements

  • Diploma in Nursing Science
  • NIMART trained and certified to initiate clients on ART/PrEP
  • Have a dispensing License
  • 5 years relevant experience
  • Strong Organisation knowledge and understanding of HTS, PEP, PrEP, ART and Community Index Testing
  • Ability to mentor and support teams to achieve their daily targets
  • Knowledge of risk segmentation for MSM
  • Ability to work independently, and support other teams members to achieve the overall objectives of the project
  • Team player, detail-focused and reliable, able to work independently
  • Good technical understanding of clinical SOPs and policy
  • Willing to work flexi hours, weekends and public holidays as per Organisational requirements
